Thirty students from the Earl Mortimer College & Sixth Form Centre in Leominster have completed a public art project, which has been unveiled at the town’s railway station.

The murals were designed and painted by a group of Year 9 Students from The Minster College, who volunteered to take part in the project supported by Arriva Trains Wales and Leominster Rail Users’ Group.

The colourful murals reflect scenes from Leominster and the surrounding community as seen through the eyes of the students and were unveiled by Mayor of Leominster, Councillor Roger Hunt.

Speaking at the unveiling, teacher Sue Wilkie said: “We started the project by looking at other murals and decided that the best ones were bright so we decided to use a chessboard effect to make ours very colourful. If you look closely at the work you will see people, places, vehicles, natural life from Leominster and its surroundings and things that we like to watch and do.”

Students worked in groups to plan and paint the murals; they started the work in their art lessons but then gave up many hours of their own time during lunchtimes, after college as well as during the holidays.

Andrew Carr, chair of Leominster Rail Users’ said: ““We were delighted that the College and Students took up the challenge of this project.  By the quality of their work and their efforts, they have added enormously to the improvements already made at the station and those that are in the pipeline for later this year."

Station manager Shelley Hall, said: “The standard is excellent and they have certainly brightened up the station.  The project has given them the opportunity to demonstrate their ability and with their work on public display, it will certainly make an impression on passengers travelling through the station.”
