Project Information:

The signalling system in the Birmingham New Street area dates back to the 1960s. It needs to be replaced to safely to reliably manage the 1,100 trains per day which use the station. The £246m upgrade is part of a wider £600m+ resignalling programme which has already seen signalling replaced across most of the West Midlands area (Snow Hill lines, Walsall, Bromsgrove, Wolverhampton, Coventry), with the Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street areas still to do.

The work is being undertaken in four phases. The first two phases (Birmingham to Wolverhampton and Duddeston - Aston - Bescot) were successfully brought into use over Christmas 2017. The third stage in May, will resignal the complex set of junctions at Proof House Junction (east of Birmingham) and the railway through Birmingham International station towards Coventry. The final stage will be resignalling of the whole Birmingham New Street station complex in 2021.

The outcome of these works will be a better, more reliable railway, with more capacity between Wolverhampton and Birmingham and Coventry
